I feel as though everyone has their own preference as to which camera is their favorite or which was “their first camera”, but, I tend to base my recommendations for those just starting off on the usage of the camera and the base functionality of it. In short, keep it simple.
So, for a good introduction to 35mm film, I’d try to get your hands on a used Canon or Nikon with the heavy metal body. Im keeping this general because there are some different models, and all of them would suit a beginner film shooter. One model in specific that I personally think is great to learn with is the Canon AE1, no longer produced as with most film bodies, but definitely a popular camera thats often seen on the market.
As for medium format, it may seem scary but I’d almost recommend trying it out before 35mm. The size of the film is larger, the functionality of the cameras are more basic usually, and the art of shooting 120 film is just really focused on the image itself. So, as an introduction to medium format film, I would advise the Kodak Duaflex, and any model of it would do. This twin lens camera can teach you loading, waist viewfinding, and framing from a very physical process. The duaflex only has an Instant function and a Bulb function, pushing the user to be creative in other ways than what digital shooters are able to do.
